EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing):

    • EMDR is a structured, evidence-based therapy designed to help folks process and heal from bothersome/traumatic experiences, those that may be currently impacting you in unhelpful ways.

    • Developed in the 1980s, with tons of research behind it, EMDR works by jumpstarting the adaptive part of the brain through guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation that recreates what occurs in REM (Rapid Eye Movement) during sleep.

    • This process helps resolve distressing memories, reducing their emotional intensity and allowing clients to move forward without being overwhelmed by the past.

    • It can be an amazing, effective therapy that does not require the detailed retelling of your memory. I often say that it is more of a feeling therapy than a talk therapy.

    • EMDR helps your brain process difficult experiences so they feel less intense over time. During a session, you’ll briefly focus on a memory or feeling while engaging in gentle back-and-forth stimulation, like eye movements, sounds, or tapping.

    • This helps the brain “reprocess” the experience so it becomes less overwhelming and easier to manage. You’re always in control, and we move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

    • EMDR is commonly used to treat trauma and PTSD, but it can also help with anxiety, depression, panic, phobias, and distressing life experiences. Anything from the past that disturbs you is a good target for EMDR. Many people also use EMDR to work through negative self-beliefs, relationship challenges, and ongoing stress.
